Reimagining Trauma Treatment.
The SH Method and Why Holistic Trauma Treatment Matters
The fundamental core of trauma is more than the terrifying experience itself. The core of trauma is the feeling of powerlessness during and after the experience. That feeling of powerlessness becomes a recorded experience in our nervous system, thoughts, emotions and physiology. Because it is an experience that is fundamentally linked in the mind and body, effective treatment has to also include our body and nervous system in order for it to be effective. I didn’t used to always believe that. What I learned in school and in my early training where the accepted treatment models that are still the most widespread today. Those models include psychodynamic approach and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approach. What I was taught was that the person has to talk in detail about the trauma in order to become “desensitized” to the trauma. What I quickly discovered was that people rather than becoming “desensitized” were becoming retraumatized by this aspect of those models. Not that I don’t love and use those models for their other benefits but I no longer subscribe to the idea of “desensitization” when it comes to trauma treatment.
What I know now is that the feeling of powerlessness can be recorded over in our nervous systems using a Somatic Trauma Treatment Approach that is backed by the latest research in nueroscience. It fundamentally and often quickly can change the nervous system, mind/body recording of the trauma memory. Which in simple words means that you will still remember what happened it just won’t bother you as much and you won’t feel powerless about it anymore. What Would Happen if We Recover Our Power Quickly and Effectively After Trauma? The SH Method for Trauma Treatment is a body/mind approach that helps people access the presence and palpable experience of empowerment. And to leave each person experiencing a deeper love and care for themselves, others and for life.”
